All you need to know for joining Merchant Navy

To join Merchant Navy as a Cadet you need to clear the Selection test and Interview of the Shipping Company, that would employ you as a cadet in future, you also need to clear the All India Common Entrance test (IMU CET) conducted by Indian Maritime University, Chennai (www.imu.edu.in)

There are two Batches in a Year. 1st batch starts in 1st week of February while 2nd begins in 1st Week of August. Basic eligibility is:

  • 12th pass out with minimum 60% in pcm.
  • Minimum 50% in English in 10th or 12th.

Above are the minimum Eligibility criteria laid down by the University while the Sponsoring shipping companies may keep slightly higher cut offs.

Yes, deck cadet training is carried under the “DNS Program Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.S.C Nautical Science”. The degree is issued by Indian Maritime University IMU, Chennai.

Captain Rs. (5, 52,500 – 6, 50,000)
Chief Officer Rs. (3, 90,000 – 4, 55,000)
2ndOfficer Rs. (1, 82,000 – 2, 60,000)
2ndOfficer Rs. (1, 10,000 – 1, 36,500)
Deck Cadet Rs. (15,000 – 35,000)

Since you would be a B.S.C Nautical Science Degree holder you can pursue higher studies like M.B.A in Chartering, Logistics Mgt., Maritime Law etc. You can also settle down ashore as a Faculty in Maritime colleges (Starting Salary: 150,000/-) or join one of the many shipping company offices as Superintendent, Marine Consultant.

  • Every maritime college in India should be approved by Director General of Shipping (D.G. Shipping) Government of India. College names should figure in the List of approved institutes on the D.G Shipping website (www.dgshipping .com)
  • These colleges have an approval nos. that can be obtained and verified from D.G. Shipping Website.
  • A highly detailed Comprehensive Inspection is carried out under the guidelines of D.G. Shipping by high level external agencies on parameters like Quality of Faculty, Standard of Training, Infrastructure, Placement Record, Training Techniques post which a grade is allocated to the colleges.
